What up homies!! Welcome to the first official blog of S.D. Skateboarding. My name is Greg Romero and I am a skateboarder in San Diego. I have a wonderful wife (Jenelle Romero), who is the wonderful woman that is responsible for this great blogger site. Thank you sweetie!!!
Hmmm...let's see...I guess I should tell you all a little bit about how I came to this point of my life eh?! My life's journey began in the enchanted land of New Mexico. You know....the state that no one seems to know exists....yeah....that one. I'm from that hot, dry, no concrete for miles place. It's pretty sweet. Anywho, here's the ghetto but adventurous story of how I became me. I was ten when I got my very first skateboard. I'll never forget the date.....it was July 14, 1994. The sun was shining....the birds were singing (actually, the birds were probable screaming for fresh air because it was hotter that hello that day!!), and my family and I were happily walking through the downtown plaza of Santa Fe. Okay, I admit that it is pretty anal to know the exact date but hey.....my whole life changed on this day. My brother Sam and my adopted sister Mattie were a little ahead of us running, frolicking, and looking inside of dumpsters to see what cool garbage they could find that would please their imaginary worlds. When, all of a sudden, as Mattie was running behind one of these city dumpsters to hide from Sam, she found it. It was a brand new skateboard! The name of the company was "New School" and it had purple and black striped grip tape with Destructo Trucks, Spitfire Wheels, and Bones Bearings that rode as if I were on Aladdin's magic carpet ride. Now, I didn't know all of this until later but at this point I had never seen a skateboard before!! I took the board from them because I'm the oldest and had seniority. And when I stepped on that skateboard for the very first time.....something dynamic happened.....something that was so intense it made my world spin for several minutes!! When I GOT ON THAT BOARD.........i fell straight on my butt. After my world stopped spinning and I was able to safely push a fart out without excrutiating pain, I got up and was a changed man. At that monent on July 14, 1994 I became Greg Romero the skater.....and no longer greg romero the nerd, ghetto gang member. And from that point I've pretty much skated everyday except when I've been injured of course.
So.....to make a long story short. I've been skating for 14 years this year, I skated pro for a few years in New Mexico, and then came to San Diego to shred the never ending concrete jungle with my wife skating by my side!! I'm including a picture of me skating so you can have an idea of how I look. The photo is from a Sun Diego demo I was a part of at Mission Beach with Finesse skateboards (keep it real Steve & Rod James)
I'm excited about this blog thing-a-mah-jig!!! The purpose of this blog is to enlighted those that do not know anything about skateboarding to the wonderful highs of this extreme practice, to share stories, interviews, photos, heck.....even footage of some of the best skateboarders in San Diego, and to teach those that want to learn so that they one day too can experience the joy of skateboarding.
Peace out party people!!!
